2026 · Oct 17, 2026 – Oct 21, 2026. Local storm reports in the storm area.
How to read this. Each dot is a local storm report: a coastal flood, a high wind gust, or marine surf and surge. A shaded area is an official coastal flood, high-surf, or wind alert. Open a dot for the place, the time in Eastern Time, and what was reported. The map opens on the reports. The boxes show or hide each kind on the map and in the list. A hollow pin is a hand-picked post from that town. When several posts are from the same town, the pin lists every one of them. It is not a full list of social media.
The technical details
Local storm reports come from the National Weather Service LSR feed as republished by the Iowa Environmental Mesonet, at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/geojson/lsr.geojson. The request uses the event dates, from 6 hours before the start through 36 hours after the end, and the states that meet the event area. A report is kept when it is a coastal flood, a non-thunderstorm wind gust or high sustained wind, or high surf and storm surge, and it falls inside that area. Plain rain reports stay out. Coastal flood warnings and watches, high-surf alerts, and wind alerts come from api.weather.gov for those states. An alert is drawn when its polygon meets the event area. A product with no polygon uses the National Weather Service zone outline instead. An alert with neither is left out. The next collect replaces that file. A cancelled product is left out. Times are Eastern Time (ET). The file is cached with the other collected feeds. If the feed is down, the previous file stays. An empty cache shows no dots. A curated post list is optional. A missing file shows no pins.
Social pins are an approved list stored with the site. The coordinates are the town, not a person. The site stores the post address and id, and does not download the photo or video. X uses the official embed from platform.twitter.com, and that script loads only on this page when an X post is approved. Instagram and Facebook are a link card until META_OEMBED_TOKEN is set, which asks Meta for the official embed. Map tiles are © OpenStreetMap contributors.
