EP132026 · 2026 · Aug 29, 2026 – Sep 8, 2026. Local storm reports near the track.
How to read this. Each dot is a local storm report: a wind gust, damage, a flood, surge, a tornado, or a tropical storm report. Open a dot for the place, the time in Eastern Time, and what was reported. The line is where the storm went. The map opens on the reports. The boxes show or hide each kind on the map and in the list. A hollow pin is a hand-picked post from that town. When several posts are from the same town, the pin lists every one of them. It is not a full list of social media.
The technical details
Local storm reports come from the National Weather Service LSR feed as republished by the Iowa Environmental Mesonet, at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/geojson/lsr.geojson. The request uses the storm’s best-track times, from 6 hours before the first fix through 36 hours after the last fix, and the states whose area meets that track expanded by 1.5 degrees. A report is kept when it is a wind gust, wind damage, flood, storm surge, a tornado, or a tropical storm report (the National Weather Service type TROPICAL CYCLONE), and the storm center was within 200 miles of that place. The center is a straight line between best-track fixes. A report still counts for 12 hours after the center was last within 200 miles, so a late flood or damage report can be included. Rain reports stay out. Times are Eastern Time (ET). The file is cached with the other collected feeds. If the feed is down, the previous file stays. An empty cache shows no dots. A curated post list is optional. A missing file shows no pins.
Social pins are an approved list stored with the site. The coordinates are the town, not a person. The site stores the post address and id, and does not download the photo or video. X uses the official embed from platform.twitter.com, and that script loads only on this page when an X post is approved. Instagram and Facebook are a link card until META_OEMBED_TOKEN is set, which asks Meta for the official embed. Map tiles are © OpenStreetMap contributors.
